KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new note clarifying the confusion surrounding the display sizes of the 2017 iPhones. The reputable analyst notes that the OLED iPhone that Apple will be launching next year will feature a 5.8-inch display size.

However, he predicts that the active touchscreen of the area will be smaller at around 5.1-5.2″. He says that the touchscreen area will be smaller due to “specific design purposes” and also notes that Apple would be making use of Samsung’s flexible OLED panel.

In addition, Kuo notes that he expects Apple to launch two new iPhones with LCD displays: one with a 4.7-inch screen and another one with a 5.5-inch screen.

We predict OLED iPhone will be 5.1-5.2”, despite various market speculation. In terms of the display size of the OLED iPhone, current information from the upstream points to 5.8”, while that from the downstream points to 5”, which does not conflict, in our view. We predict OLED iPhone will adopt a 5.7-5.8” flexible OLED panel (with Samsung (KR) as the exclusive supplier). Nonetheless, for ‘specific design purposes’, the actual active area may be around 5.1-5.2”. Other than the OLED model, we expect Apple to launch new 4.7” and 5.5” TFT-LCD iPhone models.

For now, it is unclear what design changes Kuo is hinting at in his note. Reports suggest that the iPhone 8 due to be unveiled in 2017 will feature an all-new glass design. While Apple wants to use OLED display on all the variants of the iPhone for next year, it will not be able to do so due to supply constraints which has forced it to keep the display panel exclusive to the Plus model of the iPhone.
