iPhone 8 to Feature Plastic Curved OLED Display with New Touch Sensing Technology

The Korean Herald reports that according to their sources, Apple’s OLED iPhone 8 will come with a curved display as Apple has ordered only plastic OLED panels and not glass panels from Samsung Display.

The report notes that the plastic OLED has been used for curved display panels for devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, while glass OLED are usually used for flat display panels.

Previously, rumors have indicated that Apple will launch a premium 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus model with an OLED screen alongside iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models with LCD displays. Today’s report confirms that the high-end OLED iPhone 8 Plus model will also come with a curved screen like Galaxy S7 and the now discontinued Galaxy Note 7.

The report also notes that the curved OLED iPhone model could feature a new sensing technology which “enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device” to differentiate it from Samsung’s phones.

According to the report, Samsung Display’s curved OLED capacity for Apple is estimated at around 70 million to 100 million units, that is less than half of Apple’s annual iPhone sales, which is around 200 million units a year. The supply constraints would probably force Apple to use OLED displays only for the premium iPhone 8 Plus model.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus comes with the best LCD displays, but display experts have rated Galaxy Note 7’s OLED display as the “Best Performing Display Ever”, so Apple needs to play catch up with Samsung’s phones when it comes to display technology.

iPhone 8 is also rumored to feature an all-glass casing, wireless charging, a dual-camera system with dual optical image stabilization, edge-to-edge display with embedded front-facing camera and Touch ID sensor.

Based on rumors, Apple seems to be planning to major upgrade for the iPhone on its 10th anniversary.
